"How 'bout 'dem Apples" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. This lovely bunch of dark red apples was hanging next to a small shed in Roseburg, Oregon on a September day. I had noticed them a few days earlier and hoped I'd have time to capture them. They picked up a subtile gleam from the indirect light and interesting turns of the leaves that captured the light or turned into shadow. Much to my delight, I finally got to capture them in oil on canvas....
"Marshall's View" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. I painted this spot, Marshall's Boat Landing, on the Willamette River North of Eugene, in Oregon. It was a warm and sunny Fall day in October. The beautiful golds and yellows of the turning trees were reflected in the blue of the river water. I captured this plein air beauty in oil on canvas....
"Pinot Paradise" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. I spent an October afternoon painting in the rows of pinot noir grapes at a local winery. It had been my fantasy to capture the plump, ripe grapes before they were harvested, and I was just in time. The winery was to start harvesting the next day. It felt like a daydream to capture the colors and undulating rows on a misty day surrounded by birdsong....
"Heceta Sunset" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. The sunsets on the Oregon coast had been gorgeous that week. I went out with a friend to attempt to capture one live in paint. We started in the afternoon, laying down our underpaintings, getting our sunset colors mixed and ready on our palettes for what was coming. As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the color show began and we hurried to capture it. Brushes were flying! I never realized how quickly a sunset passes as we scrambled to keep up. We were blessed with this gorgeous sky and were left quite out of brea...
"Winter Day at Delta Ponds" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. This was painted at Delta Ponds in Eugene, Oregon on a crisp January day. The low winter light created a cool, long glow on the pond. Bare branches of trees and shrubs are reflected in the water. Buildings are barely visible through the mist in the distance....
"Golden Gardens Trail" is an oil painting done 'en plein air', on site, at the location. This was painted at Golden Gardens Pond near Eugene, Oregon on an August day. It was an active location. Many people came by on the trail that day, jogging, strolling with toddlers, or on their way to go fishing. The rich colors and warm air belied the often gray clouds that rolled by in the clear, blue sky. I always try to add a pinch of the soil from a location into the paint to anchor it in that place....
